Tom & Jerry Movie Review: Script Analysis

Once a great man/woman (username: anxietyresister) said, “There are three things that must be obeyed in life: a)The Pope must be Catholic. b) British summers must get shorter and wetter every year. c) Tom and Jerry must never be allowed to speak.” 1992’s Tom & Jerry, among all the other significant mistakes, made the cat & mouse speak, but its latest live-action predecessor filled the former loophole but has repeatedly many of the already attempted mistakes again. Director’s last name is (Tim) Story, but that’s what is missing from the film.

There is a reason why the original makers (William Hanna, Joseph Barbera) of the show wanted this idea to be a show and not a feature film. The lead human character in the movie, Kayla, says to Tom & Jerry, “It’s like you’re fighting for years”, and that’s precisely where the problem lies. Now, just like you all fans, even I’ve binge-watched the show repeatedly for hours without getting bored, but that’s not the same case here. Kevin Costello’s story couldn’t maintain the balance between persuasive nostalgia, innocent whimsy & quality comedy to keep us intrigued.

There were two ways this could’ve got proper justice, either go all way the lame or pen the smartest comedy better than anyone ever has. This clearly goes nowhere towards neither of those directions. This is just a lazy attempt at milking our textbook prolonged yearning for things we left in childhood. Why didn’t they go all cartoon? The only real people affected by this Tom & Jerry’s live-action buffoonery are those who are watching them on-screen.

Tom & Jerry Movie Review: Star Performance

Thankfully Tom & Jerry don’t speak, so there’s no real voice-cast to talk about them. From the actors in human flesh, Chloë Grace Moretz holds the most crucial role in the film, which works at certain levels. She’s overqualified for the job, and so is Michael Peña’s suffocating portrayal of Deputy Hotel Manager Terrence.

None of the actors gets their moment of fame for even a single scene. Peña ends up being a laughing stock, as he follows a very unimpressive character-arc. The moment I felt makers had got something with Patsy Ferran’s out-of-the-box weirdo Joy, unfortunately, the result remained to the opposite of her character name. Colin Jost, Pallavi Sharda as the wedding’s Groom & Bride, are good, but they are not for this picture.

Tom & Jerry Movie Review: Direction, Music

The biggest issue with the film is hiring someone like Tim Story & Kevin Costello to delegate them the most important aspects of the narrative. This one needs people from the universe. Tom & Jerry have grown for the audience. Even if not for all the childhood memories attached to it, this is still a story with flat jokes & forced comedy.

The problem with the soundtrack is it has very limited SFX from the show to work upon. There are just a couple of sound-effects that will excite the 90s kid in you. With songs like A Tribe Called Quest’s song Can I Kick It? & Jacob Banks’ Something Beautiful, the motive of composer Christopher Lennertz doesn’t make sense. Where’s Bruno Mars’ Count On Me, which gelled so well with the theme in the trailer? A disappointment nevertheless.

Tom & Jerry Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done; there’s no way the show’s fans are liking this. It fails to achieve the only thing it’s designed to do – make you laugh.

One and a half stars!

PRIDE MONTH: FAVORITE YURI ANIME: YURIKUMA ARASHI

Hi everyone, it’s PRIDE MONTH!!! And for this year, I have decided to write about my favorite yuri series. Although I’m always talking about how much I love yuri, I realized I’ve never really done a post about my favorite girl x girl series. So, here are the best yuri series in my opinion.

I could literally talk about yuri forever, but I tried to narrow this done as best I can. Hopefully, I will have time to write about more yuri in the future.

Yuri Kuma Arashi Yuri Beginning

This might come as a shock considering I try to steer away from fan service or sexual themes… but I love this anime so much. Yurikuama Arashi is as crazy as its name: “Lesbian Bear Storm.” Among all the abstract storytelling are lesbian bears, “invisible storms,” weird fan service, and tons of other insanity. However, mixed into all this chaos are important social themes. In Japan, homosexuality relationships are not really seen as legitimate, especially lesbian relationships. The main character Kureha, the “bears,” and some other characters have to face discrimination in order to freely love other girls.

Admittedly, it does get really confusing at times and the fan service can be a little much; however, at least some of the fan service has a deeper meaning. If you can get past the first three episodes (and the ecchi opening), I highly recommend this anime. If needed, go back and rewatch the first three once you’ve got further into the series. It will help things make more sense.

Overall, the series is truly one bizarre yet awesome yuri-filled ride. If anything else, the bear characters, especially Lulu (<3), are adorable and you will see some legit yuri throughout the series. And personally, I love its weird surrealism.

There are so many yuri-related series I like, and one day I will make a giant list of all my recommendations. But some recent 100% yuri anime I enjoyed. even though they have their issues, are Citrus, Netsuzou Trap, and Sakura Trick.

FAVORITE YURI MANGA: PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING BY MILK MORINAGA

Even with more yuri anime series coming out, it still kills me that none of Milk Morinaga’s work have been animated. I absolutely love her manga because they show legit yuri and capture what it is like to be a queer teenage girl who is trying to figure out their sexuality.

Mari and Akko Girl Friend Manga

Morinaga’s manga Girl Friends is the first official English yuri tankoban I ever bought. It depicts the story of Akko and Mari, two normal Japanese high school girls. The two girls become friends and slowly begin to develop feelings for each other. The two of them flit around their feelings for each other as they try to cope with their identities. Overall, the story is realistic, heartwarming, and just… go read it see for yourself! It is a yuri masterpiece. Mari and Akko’s journey will send you on an emotional roller coaster- and you probably won’t be able to put the manga down.

KISSES, SIGN, AND CHERRY BLOSSOM PINK

Kisses, Sighs, And Cherry Blossom Kisses

They look similar, but these two girls are NOT Mari and Akko lol

Kisses, Sighs, and Cherry Blossom Pink is a short collection of one-shot yuri stories, where all the characters and their love stories are somehow related. Some stories in this collection are Morinaga’s very first. You can tell that they’re her earlier work just based on the artwork and the storytelling, but that doesn’t change how great it is. In a weird way, Morinaga’s innocence makes the story more innocent and adds to its overall heartfelt appeal. If you want some fluffy, touching stories about girls being in love, check out this manga.

SECRET OF THE PRINCESS

Secret of the Princess (sometimes called The Princess’s Mirror) is one of Morinaga’s newer works, and although it’s pretty short, it’s phenomenal. In this manga, the main character Miu is a girly girl, who only really cares about being a “princess.” Gender roles and what a woman is “supposed to be” are embedded in her. But then she meets Fujiwara who is a tomboy and doesn’t quite follow gender roles. Because of certain circumstances, the two start “pretend” dating. However, Miu says the relationship isn’t real and that she just wants to practice dating before she gets a “real” boyfriend.” Depsite this, as they spend more time together, Miu realizes that their relationship isn’t so fake, and she begins developing feelings for Fujiwara. In the end, the gender roles are set aside and they become a couple. As someone who is genderfluid, I really appreciate the focus on gender roles in this manga. On top of that, it is funny and beautifully done.

I also REALLY love the Bloom Into You manga and a lot of unknown yuri manga, but Morinaga-sensei needs some extra attention! We should start a campaign where her work is turned into an anime.

FAVORITE YURI CHARACTER: TOMOYO DAIDOUJI
Tomoyo and Sakura Gay Gif

At first, I had trouble thinking of my all-time favorite yuri character, and then it hit me: TOMOYO~!

If you aren’t aware, Tomoyo is from Cardcaptor Sakura. She is Sakura’s best friend, and she has a very obvious crush on Sakura. She’s constantly taking pictures of and recording Sakura as she goes on her magical adventures. Tomoyo also regularly makes Sakura’s battle costumes from scratch (it is labor of love). Additionally, she’s always saying how cute Sakura is and other very yuri things. Tomoyo’s yuri moments happen all the time in the original and new Cardcaptor series, and yet it never seems to get old. One thing I like about Tomoyo is that she is never too forceful, unlike other yuri characters. (I love Kuroko from A Certain Scientific Railgun, but she can be a bit much at times). She respects that Sakura is straight and that she has feelings for Syaoran. She even does her best to get them together.

On top of everything else, Tomoyo is also always wearing the cutest outfits and has an adorable oujo-sama speech pattern. She is truly my favorite gay daughter.

FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH A YURI CHARACTER: MINT AIZAWA
Mint Aizawa Tokyo Mew Mew Gif

Although I loooooove Tomoyo, there is another influential yuri character I want to write about, the very first one I encountered. That character is Mint Aizawa from Tokyo Mew Mew, one of my favorite manga ever. Technically, I was exposed to Tomoyo first, considering Cardcaptor Sakura premiered earlier. However, the Sakura dub I watched on Toonami watered down Tomoyo’s gayness, and even if they didn’t, I would have been a little too young to understand that she was gay.

I began reading the Tokyo Mew Mew in 2004 or 2005, when I was in middle school. And at that time, I understood right away that Mint was gay, like SUPER gay for another female character, Zakuro. To do this day, Mint is one of my favorite yuri characters. She helped introduce me to the idea of yuri and girls liking girls, right around the time I was starting to realize my own sexuality. Ironically, I later developed a crush on Ichigo, which further proved my own attraction to girls O_O;

Mint and Zakuro Yuri Moment

I never really watched the English dub of Tokyo Mew Mew because it was terrible, but I did watch the Japanese sub as an adult. And Mint is super gay in it too. I actually began writing a yuri fanfiction about Mint and Ichigo, but never finished it 😦 Maybe when I retire…

FAVORITE YURI COUPLE: NIBUTANI X DEKOMORI
Nibutani x Dekomri

I tried to think of just one yuri couple that is all my time-favorite, but it is just too difficult. This post would like 5,000 words if I talked about every single yuri couple I like. I’ll make a separate post (eventually).

But for this one, I decided to focus on one of my favorite couples that isn’t that well known: Sanae Dekomori and Shinka Nibutani. This couple is from my favorite anime, Love, Chuunibyou, and Other Delusions. And Dekomori is one of my favorite characters of all time. So, naturally, I love her and her (non-canon) girlfriend, Nibutani!

Nibutani and Deko Fighting Gif

Dekomori is chuunibyou and is always doing crazy stuff that annoys Nibutani, who tries to deny her chuunibyou past. In fact, in a weird twist of fate, Nibutani is secretly Morisummer, an online personality that Dekomori practically worships. At first, Dekomori doesn’t believe Nibutani is actually Morisummer. The two constantly bicker over this and just fight in general, However, underneath it all, they deeply care about each other and Kyoto Animation has even thrown in some yuri moments on purpose, such as an accidental kiss between them.

Dekomori and Nibutani are truly adorable. I also started writing a yuri fanfiction about them, but also never finished it ;~; One day…

Dekomori and Nibutani
Dekomori is the greatest :3

And that’s everything for this post! I’ll attempt to write more general yuri posts in the yuri, if I don’t get too busy x_X For more info and recommendations for yuri series, check out my other yuri posts, or visit the Yuri Nation, the Lily Garden, and Yuri Reviews.

Freaky Is the Cutes Face "Kathryn Newton and Vince Vaughn" | Phillip Rudolv

A delightful mutant hybrid of two seemingly incongruous teen movie genres, cheeky Blumhouse satire “Watch Freaky Online” might just as well have been called “Freaky Friday the 13th.” That’s essentially the pitch for a mashup that’s half slasher movie and half body-swap comedy, delivered with the self-aware wink of Wes Craven’s “Scream,” as a serial killer known as “the Blissfield Butcher” (Vince Vaughn) unwittingly trades places with his latest victim, dorky high school misfit Millie (Kathryn Newton). Freaky Full Movie

Picture this: On Thursday the 12th, Millie is humiliated by the shop teacher (Alan Ruck). On Friday, she settles the score … only it’s not Millie but the Butcher who’s driving her body — and leaving corpses all over school — unless she can reverse the curse before midnight. Co-written and directed by ’80s horror aficionado Christopher Landon, “Freaky” has fun with its premise, and audiences will too — though it’s a shame that the release date fell two weeks after Halloween.

Watch Freaky (2020) HD Movies Stream GDrive

Watch Freaky (2020) FULL HD Movies

In a decidedly R-rated prologue that sets the tone for just how grisly the subsequent murders will be, four high school students die in cringe-worthy ways that are so creatively absurd they’re unlikely to give anyone nightmares. Some may even laugh at the sight of, say, a kid’s head impaled from either side by a broken tennis racket, but the real punchline is the reveal of “Swingers” star Vaughn as the Blissfield Butcher.

At 6’5″, the hulking actor certainly has the build to play a small-town serial killer, and the moment he lowers his mask is nothing if not a nod to Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot “Psycho” remake (of all things). Turns out, Vaughn’s better at playing a teenage girl than he is at harnessing his inner Norman Bates.

Just before the opening scene ends, the Butcher steals an ancient Mayan sacrifice dagger, intending to use it to continue his killing spree the following night. What he doesn’t know is that it’s imbued with a corny, centuries-old curse — one that Millie’s friends easily explain via a simple Google search.

The Butcher’s next victim, Millie, is meant to be a wallflower, which is kind of a stretch for Newton, who played the awkward friend in “Lady Bird” but comes across like one of the popular girls in this configuration (she nervously fingers her hair, Kristen Stewart style, but the shy routine feels like a put-on). Newton’s casting makes more sense once the switch happens: When Millie wakes up Friday morning, she grabs the butcher knife in the kitchen and the red “Rebel Without a Cause” jacket from her sister’s closet and heads to school, ready to reinvent herself.

Good thing the Butcher is just a maniac and not also a pervert, or this movie might have taken a turn into very different territory. In any case, the Butcher sees his transformation as an upgrade, giving him easier access to his preferred target — vapid teens — whereas it’s the previously insecure Millie who wants her body back.

https://sites.google.com/view/frkyhq/

Landon, who also helmed the gory “Groundhog Day” redux “Happy Death Day,” excels at both the sly comedic and high-style horror halves of the movie’s personality, though combining the two can be bumpy. “Freaky” is technically a farce — that exaggerated genre so beloved by the French, so often exhausting to Americans, in which characters bumble their way through contrived comic situations — which may explain why Landon finds it somewhat unwieldy at times.

Take the scene in which Vaughn, who spends most of the movie “inhabited” by a teenage girl, tries to convince Millie’s two best friends, who are gay (Misha Osherovich) and Black (Celeste O’Connor) and acutely aware of their odds as supporting characters in a slasher movie, that it’s really Millie inside some random dude’s body. Vaughn busts out their secret handshake, which is a hoot, but the kind of joke that no one really wants to see repeated every time she needs to communicate her predicament to someone new.

“Freaky” knows that audiences have seen enough movies to accept its crazy setup, but it also realizes that the more characters discuss it on-screen, the lamer it seems — which explains why the characters start to behave in ridiculous ways as the film unspools, just to keep the plot from getting predictable. Except for the cryogenic insta-freezer inexplicably stored in the girls’ locker room, this school has the retro, reductive feel of a  cable series from the ’90s (think “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”), when Landon and co-writer Michael Kennedy were teens.

Making this movie a couple decades later, the duo can get away with overturning the rigid gender politics of pre-Y2K adolescence, going as far as to include a queer make-out scene between Millie (trapped in the Butcher’s body) and her high school crush (Uriah Shelton). But it’s the female empowerment aspect that feels most contemporary, as Millie “feels kinda invincible” as a man, while the Butcher finds himself easily slapped around and tied up as a teenage girl. Our heroine also learns a valuable lesson during her time in the Butcher’s body: “Having balls sucks.”

The film’s tone is a bit too broad and borderline-cartoonish for “Freaky” to pull off its few sincerely emotional scenes, as when Millie uses her disguise to tell her widowed mom (Katie Finneran) what’s been on her mind. Not that anyone’s asking for such a movie to go deep. “Freaky” is more entertaining when it’s skating on the brink of camp.

Landon leans heavily on Bear McCreary’s high-suspense score, calling even more attention to the music via ironic soundtrack cues — as when a “Que Sera Sera” cover dissolves into $UicideBoy$ and Travis Barker’s punk anthem “Don’t Trust Anyone!” for the thoroughly modern Millie’s grand re-entrance — but it’s DP Laurie Rose who gives the movie its signature feel. As a meta entry in that most disposable of genres, the teen slasher movie, “Freaky” manages to feel original, which is saying something, since it’s basically warping conventions we’ve all seen a million times before.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema

This article is about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cinema. For films directly affected by the pandemic, see List of films impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on the film industry in 2020, mirroring its impacts across all arts sectors. Across the world and to varying degrees, cinemas and movie theaters have been closed, festivals have been cancelled or postponed, and film releases have been moved to future dates or delayed indefinitely. Due to cinemas and movie theaters closing, the global box office has dropped by billions of dollars, and streaming has become more popular, while the stock of film exhibitors has also dropped dramatically. Many blockbusters originally scheduled to be released between March and November have been postponed or canceled around the world, with film productions also halted.

In early March 2020, it was predicted that the global box office could lose US$5 billion as a result of the pandemic.[3][4]

Countries that are pandemic hot-spots have closed or restricted cinemas and movie theaters, negatively affecting film revenue. Attendance has also been lower in other regions. Following the pandemic in mainland China, 70,000 cinemas were closed in January 2020. In the first two months of 2020, China's box office was down to US$3.9 million, compared to US$2.148 billion in the first two months of 2019.[1] Later, as a result of the pandemic in Italy, on March 8, 2020 the Italian government ordered all cinemas to be closed, for up to a month. Before the closure, box office tracking estimated a 94% drop for the weekend of March 6–8 compared to the same period the previous year.[5] Because of the growing pandemic in France, cinemas are operating at half capacity, leaving strategic seats unavailable to reduce proximity in the screens,[6] a move followed days later by the Irish and Northern Irish cinema chain Omniplex Cinemas.[7] On March 12, Qatar also closed all cinemas,[8] as did the US on March 17, Malaysia and Thailand on March 18,[9] the UK on March 20, Australia and New Zealand on March 22, and Singapore on March 27.[10] After a state of emergency was declared in Tokyo and six other prefectures in Japan on April 7,[11] over 220 cinemas were closed.[12][13][14]

Percentage box office losses (outside of mainland China) for January to March 3, 2020 are: 70–75% in Italy, 60% in South Korea, 35% in Hong Kong, the Philippines, and Singapore, and 30% in Taiwan.[15] The Los Angeles box office, a key movie market and local economic backbone, was projected to fall by 20% in April 2020 compared to its 2019 figures, based on the state of emergency declared in the county at the start of March 2020.[15] Despite the state of emergency, as single screens within movie theaters do not hold more than 1,000 people, they were granted an exemption from the ban on mass public gatherings in California. A National Association of Theatre Owners representative for California and Nevada announced that theaters would stay open; historically, movie theaters have remained open during other similar emergencies.[16] However, a survey of Americans over the opening March weekend showed support for closing movie theaters.[6] On March 15, Deadline reported that over 100 movie theaters in the US had closed, some due to local rulings and others because of an inability to keep them open with no demand;[2] on March 17, with national restrictions to social gatherings, cinemas across the United States closed.[9] However, drive-in theaters, where customers stay in their own cars, were not closed, and quickly grew in popularity again.[17]

The opening March weekend saw a dramatically lower box office than the same weekend in 2019. The 2019 opening March weekend saw the release of Captain Marvel, which alone earned over US$153 million domestically that weekend, compared to the 2020 weekend's biggest film, Onward, with around US$39 million.[18][19] The next weekend saw the lowest total US box office intake since the October 30–November 1, 1998 weekend, with lower percentage drops than the weekend after 9/11, at US$55.3 million.[2] Onward itself saw the biggest weekend-to-weekend drop of any Pixar film, making $10.5 million, though was still the weekend's biggest film and the only one to make over $10 million.[2] On March 19, Walt Disney Studios and Universal Pictures announced that they would no longer report box office figures.[20] Comscore therefore announced the next day that it would indefinitely suspend its reporting of box office estimates and charts.[21]

On March 26, after local transmission of the virus had dropped to 0% in China, movie theaters there began to re-open, with reports that 250–500 theaters were opening, but the next day authorities again closed all movie theaters in the country.[22][23]

Scheduling
Awards
Two award ceremonies were held after the coronavirus became widespread: the 45th César Awards on February 28, and the 43rd Japan Academy Film Prize on March 6. The Japanese Academy Prize ceremony went ahead on March 6. However, the ceremony was conducted without any guests or journalists.[24] The 14th Seiyu Awards cancelled its live ceremony scheduled for March 7 in Tokyo and instead broadcast the winners on Nippon Cultural Broadcasting's internet radio program.[25] The 40th Golden Raspberry Awards were initially intended to take place as planned on March 14.[26] However, it was ultimately cancelled. The ceremony's winners were announced on their YouTube channel on March 16.[27]

The International Indian Film Academy Awards, planned to take place on March 27, was canceled,[4] while the Italian Academy's David di Donatello ceremony has been postponed from April 3 to May 8.[28] The American Film Institute's lifetime achievement ceremony to honor Julie Andrews was pushed back from April to the summer.[29] The 2020 Platino Awards were also postponed.[30]

The Academy Awards and Golden Globe Awards modified their eligibility criteria for their 2021 editions, as they usually require that a film be screened theatrically for a minimum length of time. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association mentioned that films released via non-theatrical means (such as digital) would be eligible if they were scheduled to have a "bona fide theatrical release" in Los Angeles after March 15 (with a cutoff date to be determined).[31][32][33] The Best Foreign Language Film award will similarly offer eligibility for films originally scheduled for a theatrical release in their country of origin between March 15 and a date to be determined.[34] The 93rd Academy Awards will similarly allow films released via password-protected or transactional video on demand to be eligible if they were originally scheduled to have a theatrical release. Once cinemas have sufficiently resumed operations, the requirement that a film be screened for at least a week will be reinstated. In addition to Los Angeles, eligible screenings will also be allowed to take place in one of five other major U.S. cities.[35][36]

On June 15, it was announced that the Academy Awards would be pushed back by two months from February 28 to April 25, so that the cutoff for eligibility could likewise be extended from December 31, 2020 to February 28. The Academy Governors Awards and Scientific and Technical Awards have been postponed indefinitely. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) subsequently announced that it would follow suit and postpone the 74th British Academy Film Awards to April.[37] On June 22, the Golden Globe Awards were also delayed from early-January to February 28, 2021 (filling the Academy Awards' former date).[38]

In Canada, the pandemic shutdown forced the cancellation of both the 8th Canadian Screen Awards[39] and the 22nd Quebec Cinema Awards.[40] Both programs ultimately announced their winners through virtual livestreaming, the Canadian Screen Awards presenting film winners on May 28,[41] and the Quebec Cinema Awards presented on June 10.[42] As of August 2020, neither the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television nor Québec Cinéma have announced their plans for the 2021 ceremonies.

Return to Epipo (Documentary) Hungarian Film 2020 - Reviews

Return to Epipo [+], the second feature-length documentary from Hungarian director Judit Oláh, screens in the documentary competition of the Sarajevo Film Festival after its world premiere at CPH:DOX, and tells the fascinating and engrossing story of a summer camp in socialist Hungary that feels more like a cult than a place where kids spend their vacations.
